Baseball Drops Two at Point Park

PITTSBURGH  –  Siena Heights baseball traveled to Pittsburgh for an early doubleheader against the RV Point Park Pioneers. Game one ended with a Saints loss 7-1. Game two held a similar fate for Siena as they fell 8-3 against the Pioneers.

Game 1 SHU1, Point Park 7 – 7 innings

Haydn Smith led the Saints with one run and a batting average of .333. Adam Wilding tallied one hit out of his three at-bats. As did Jakob Scroggie, who went 1-for-2 from the plate, collecting one hit for the books. Pitcher Matthew Love (L, 1-2) saw three innings of action facing 17 batters and striking out four. Luc Olson closed for the Saints seeing four opponents and striking out three.

Starting off the game, Smith reached first on a single and moved into scoring position by stealing second. Thanks to a defensive error from Point Park, Smith got home scoring the game's first run. The home team scored one run in the bottom of the first to even out the score at 1-1. The Pioneers would score three runs in the second and one run in the third and fourth to take the lead, 6-1.

With one final run in the bottom of the sixth Point Park sealed the 7-1 victory by holding SHU to only three hits in game one.

Game 2, SHU 3, Point Park 8 – 7 innings

Chris Winkelman paved the way for Siena Heights, batting 1-for-3 from the plate, scoring once, and bringing in one run. Wilding crossed home once, as did Cameron Hammer. Both Thomas Lemnek and Collin Bammer tallied one hit and one RBI during game two. As Smith and Cole VanWasshenvoa each added one hit to the scorebook for SHU. John Miller started on the mound for the Navy and Yellow, seeing action in 2.2 innings. He faced 18 batters, allowed five hits, and sat down two opponents. Ben Weadock closed for Siena seeing five batters and striking out three.

Once again, the Saints would score first, adding three runs to the board in the top of the second to take the lead. Hammer reached home on an RBI single from Winkleman as Wilding ran home on an RBI single from Lamnek. Winkelman scored thanks to Bammer hitting an RBI single.

The bottom of the third saw a lead change as the Pioneers put five runs on the board. The home team would display a solid defensive showing to hold the Siena Heights Saints to only one hit the rest of the game. While the Pioneers' offense scored three runs to end the game 8-3.

SHU baseball competes against Lourdes University in a WHAC conference doubleheader on April 30. Game one is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM.
