Baseball Loses Both in WHAC Doubleheader at Indiana Tech

FORT WAYNE, Indiana – Siena Heights baseball competed in a Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) doubleheader against Indiana Tech on Saturday, April 23rd. The Saints fell in game one 20-3 against the Warriors and 16-1 in game two.

Game 1 SHU 3, Indiana Tech 20 – 7 innings

Adam Wilding led the Saints, batting .500 to reach home once and bring in one run. Haydn Smith (1-for-3) and Jakob Scroggie scored once during the first game. Cole VanWasshenvoa and Cameron Hammer both tallied one RBI. Pitcher Zach Bloom (L, 3-6) saw action in 4.2 innings facing 24 batters. Luc Olson pitched for 1.1 innings facing nine batters and striking out two.

The first inning saw three-up-three-down for both teams. The Warriors brought in two runs during the second to take the lead. SHU had two runners cross home plate to tie the game at 2-2. First was Smith, who ran home on a fly ball to center field hit by VanWasshenova. Scroggie followed after Hammer hit an RBI single to right-center on the next play.

The bottom of the fifth inning proved fatal for the Saints, who gave up 11 runs allowing the Warriors to run away with the game. Wilding hit a home run in the top of the seventh, putting the visiting team's third run on the board. Ended the game with a Siena loss to the Indiana Tech Warriors, 20-3.

Game 1 SHU 1, Indiana Tech 16 – 7 innings

Leading the Saints in game two was VanWasshenova, who scored a run for SHU and reached base twice on walks. Scroggie, Hammer, and Wilding tallied one hit during the second game for Siena Heights. Parker Swartz (L, 2-6) pitched for the Saints seeing 3.1 innings of action to face off against 26 opponents. Jarrett Cousino pitched two innings facing 17 batters and sat down three.

Indiana Tech jumped to an early lead scoring ten runs in the opening three innings while holding the Saints scoreless. In the fourth inning, SHU saw VanWasshenova reach base on a walk and later reached second on a wild pitch moving into scoring position. Wilding hit a single to left field, moving VanWAsshenova to third. With Parker Mabe up to bat, VanWashenova reached home on a throwing error by the Warriors earning the first and only run of the game for Siena Heights.

The home team would use strong defense to hold the Saints to a one-run game, finishing game two 16-1.

UP NEXT

The Saints travel to Lima, Ohio, on Sunday, April 24th, to take on #23 UNOH. The first game is set to start at 1:00 PM.
