ADRIAN, Mich. – Siena Heights baseball hosted the Goshen College Maple Leafs for a home doubleheader on Wednesday, April 20th. The Saints swept the Leafs, taking game one 4-0 and finishing game two 6-3.

Game one SHU 4, Goshen 0 – 7 innings

Leading the way for the Saints was Haydn Smith, who crossed home twice. Jakob Scroggie batted .500 and scored once. Cole VanWAsshenvoa (1-for-3) put one run on the board and tallied two RBIs. Kenny Layman saw three at-bats and collected two RBIs. Pitcher Chase Molnar (W, 2-3) pitched all seven innings facing 26 batters striking out eight opponents, and not allowing any runs.

SHU started strong putting up one run in the bottom of the first after Smith crossed home plate thanks to a hit from Layman. A mix of tough defense and a struggle to get the bats going caused the game to remain at 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning.

Smith and Scroggie reached base, and VanWasshenova stepped up to bat, doubling to left field, bringing in both runners. Layman was next in the lineup and hit a double to left field, allowing VanWasshenova to run home, making the score 4-0. Molnar would pitch a three-up-three down inning to end the game with a Siena victory.

Game one SHU 6, Goshen 3 – 7 innings

Smith led game two for the home team batting 2-for-3 and scoring twice. VanWasshenvoa crossed home plate twice and reached base three times on walks. Cameron Hammer (1-for-4) put one run on the board for SHU and brought in two runs. Matthew Love (2-for-3) saw one scoring play during game two. Jacob Jackson, Adam Wilding, and Parker Mabe each collected one RBI. Ryan Sullivan (W, 2-0) started for Siena Heights, pitching four innings, striking out three batters, and allowing three runs. John Miller saw action in two innings as he sat down five opponents.

Off to a quick start, the visiting Maple Leafs put two runs on the board to take the lead in the first. Although, not for long as the Saints would respond with three runs. Which saw Love, VanWasshenova, and Hammer cross home plate.

With a score of 3-2 favoring the home team, the game settled into a battle of defenses. During the fourth, Goshen brought in one run, as did Siena, who scored twice to remain in the lead. The bottom of the sixth held the last scoring play of the game when Smith reached home on a wild pitch to bring the score to 6-3. Layman pitched the final inning, striking out all three batters to end the second game of the day with his second save of the year.
