Saints Falter in Doubleheader Versus Rochester

ADRIAN, Mich. – SHU baseball competed against the Rochester University Warriors in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 14th. During game one, Siena Heights scored five out of the seven innings but ultimately fell to the Warriors 9-7. Game two saw high-scoring innings from both teams and resulted in a loss for the Saints, 10-9.

Game 1 SHU 7, Rochester 9 – 7 innings

Cole VanWasshenova led the Saints with two runs and a batting average of .400. Haydn Smith batted .500 to reach home once and record two RBIs. As Adam Wilding, Jakob Scroggie, Anthony Scali, and Parker Mabe each reached home plate once. Both Kenny Layman and Cameron Hammer collected two RBIs during game one. Pitcher Christian Jabiro started for Siena, playing five innings to see 27 batters, striking out four. Matthew Love (L, 1-1) pitched two innings allowing two runs and sat down one opponent.

Hammer brought Smith home for the first run of the day to take the lead in the bottom of the first. Then, VanWasshenova crossed home after a single to left field from Layman. The teams would trade runs during the second and third innings to make the score 4-2 in favor of the home team.

In the top of the fourth, the Rochester Warriors would hit a four RBI homerun to take the lead. However, Siena would respond with two runs of their own, both from Mabe and Scali. After a dry fifth inning, the score was 7-6, favoring the visiting team. A run from VanWasshenvoa tied the game, but unfortunately, a Warrior homerun brought in two runs to win the game 9-7.

Game 2 SHU 9, Rochester 10 – 9 innings

Layman (1-for-3) led for the home team scoring twice and bringing in three runs. Smith batted .500 during game two, allowing him to cross home plate twice. VanWasshenova reached home twice and batted 1-for-3 in the nightcap. Winkelman (1-for-4) made it home once and tallied two RBIs. Hammer put one run on the broad while bringing in two runs. Love crossed home plate once, and Wilding brought in one RBI. Freshman Pitcher Chase Molnar (L, 1-3) pitched the first 5.1 innings for Siena, facing 22 batters, allowing five runs, and striking out six opponents. Ryan Sullivan pitched 1.2 innings for the Saints facing nine batters and sat down two. 

The first two innings would remain 0-0 as each team displayed strong defense allowing at most four batters to step up to the plate. Rochester would score first in the top of the third to take the lead 1-0. However, Siena Heights would respond with four runs of their own. First was Smith and Love, who ran home after a sacrifice fly from Hammer. Next was VanWsshenova, who scored after Jakob Scroggie singled toward shortstop. Finally, Layman would cross home after a defensive error by the Warriors allowed Winkelman to reach first. 

In the sixth, Rochester would regain the lead, thanks to a two-run home run. The inning ended with six runs total to make the score 7-4. The home team would ramp up defensive efforts to keep the Warriors hitless in the seventh, seeing a three-up-three-down inning. The two teams would trade runs in the eighth and ninth. Siena's last push fell short with only one run in the bottom of the ninth, bringing the game to a close at 10-9.
