Saints Fall to Crosstown Rival Adrian in 9-innings

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Traveling across town, Siena Heights Baseball saw action on Wednesday, March 16th, against Adrian College. The nine-inning game started at 5:00 p.m. and ended with a score of 15-8, favoring the Bulldogs.

The Saints tallied 11 hits while bringing in eight runs. Both Chris Winkelman and Cole VanWasshenova scored twice. Winkelman went 4 for 5 from the plate as VanWasshenova batted .250. Kenny Layman saw five at-bats, scoring once and collecting two RBIs. Thomas Lamnek (1-for-3) brought in two RBIs of his own. Haydn Smith, Adam Wilding, and Parker Mabe rounded out the remaining three scores for SHU, each holding one hit on the night. Zach Bloom (L,0-4) participated in two innings, allowing six runs and striking out one batter. Ryan Sullivan saw one inning of play and struck out two Bulldogs. Kenny Layman pitched two innings facing 13 batters and sat down four.

The blue and yellow started strong, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Smith scored first on a single from Wilding. Next was Wilding and VanWasshenova, who found home after Layman's triple to right-center hit. Adrian scored two runs in the first and second innings to gain a 4-3 advantage.

A walk loaded the bases in the top of 3rd-inning, setting up Thomas Lamnek, who hit an RBI single up the middle to bring home Winkelman and Layman to give the lead back to SHU, 5-4. Adrian College scored in the bottom half of the third to knot things up at five.

Adrian used a five-run fourth to pull away to a 10-5 lead. A run in the next two innings extended the margin to 12-5, heading into the 7th-inning.

Winkelman came home on a wild pitch, and Mabe reached home plate to trim the deficit to five runs, 12-7, in the eighth inning. The Bulldogs tallied three more scores in the bottom half of the eighth for a 15-7 lead. Cole VanWasshenvoa hit a home run in the ninth to put the score at 15-8, where it would remain through the final inning.
