Saints Baseball Comes Up Short in the Battle at Midway

Midway, Kentucky – On Sunday, February 27th, the SHU baseball team traveled down to Midway, Kentucky, to face off against the Eagles of Midway University. After a hard-fought battle, the Saints fell 5-2 on the road in game one and 6-2 in the second match, bringing the overall season record to 1-5. 

Game 1: SHU 2, Midway University 5 (9 innings)

Midway started strong in the bottom of the first, bringing in two runs, followed by an additional three runs later in the bottom of the fourth. In an effort to come back, Cameron Hammer tripled down the rightfield line to bring in Cole VanWasshenova for a scoring run. Continuing in the push, Brad South hit a ground ball, allowing Cameron Hammer to score. The Sixth inning saw two runs for the blue and yellow, bringing the score to 5-2. The game saw six hits from the Saints and nine from the Eagles.

Game 2: SHU 2, Midway University 6 (7 innings)

With a total of six hits for SHU and seven hits for Midway, the game started with a strong showing from Midway, who put up five of their six scoring runs in the first three innings. Then in the top of the fifth, Brad South doubled to bring in Cameron Hammer for a score, giving South an RBI in the books. However, the Eagles answered with their sixth run in the bottom of the fifth with a score from Halterman. Looking to fight back, the Saints found hope in an infield error by the Eagles, allowing Jacob Jackson to reach second base. A scoring run by Cole VanWasshenova was also gained from the defensive error. The final score left Midway University up 6-2 over SHU.
