HOW IT HAPPENED

The Cougars took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st-inning when Brant Mast hit a triple down the right-field line to open play. He made it home on the next play to give SAU the lead.

Wilding brought Cameron Hammer with a double to right-center in the bottom of the 3rd-inning. Cole VanWasshenova singled to right field on the next play to move Wilding to third. He scored on the next play to give the Saints a 2-1 lead going into the fourth.

Spring Arbor knotted things up with a score in the top half of the 4th-inning. The Cougars recaptured the lead, 4-2, in the 6th-inning when Landon Raczkowski hit a two-run homer to left field. Later on in the inning, a Saints error allowed two additional runs to score and put things at 6-2 in favor of SAU. VanWasshenova scored in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to three runs, 6-3.

The lead was extended in the 7th-inning with an RBI single from the Cougars. Wilding was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring Chris Winkelman home and put the score at 6-4. Vanwasshenova then hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Hammer to put the Saints within one run of tying things, but the error in the previous inning would prove to be the difference in the game.
