Saints Drop Doubleheader to Saint Francis in Home opener

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team dropped a doubleheader against Saint Francis (Ind.) in their home opener of the 2021 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Saint Francis (Ind.) (15), Siena Heights (4) (7 innings)

The Saints remained scoreless until the sixth inning as Saint Francis (Ind.) scored runs in every inning aside from the fifth and sixth innings. Parker Swartz started on the mound for the Saints earning two strikeouts while Zach Bloom closed the game with three strike-outs. 

The Cougars came out hot as they scored three runs in the first inning as J. Valedes homered to left field for an RBI in the first bat of the game. T. Prince doubled down the left-field line for an RBI that scored N. Freimuth. D. Miller reached first on an error by centerfield that scored D. Grossman.

Saint Francis (Ind.) earned two runs in the second inning. N. Freimuth singled for an RBI scoring J. Valedes. D. Grossman singled down the rf line for an RBI scoring N. Freimuth.

The Cougars continued their streak in the third inning as C. Franz doubled down the leftfield line earning two RBIs ad A. Brunson and D. Miller scored. J. Nagy singled to right center, for an RBI that scored C. Franz.

In the fifth inning, D. Miller homered to right field earning two RBIs scoring T. Prince.  A. Brunson scored on a fielder's choice off of Valdes grounder to shortstop. 

Siena changed their luck in the sixth inning scoring four runs. Mike Garcia reached first on a fielding error by third-base earning an RBI scoring Brad South. Jarret Cousino reached first on an error by center scoring Mike Garcia scored. Cody Henderson walked for an RBI that scored A. Wilding. Chris Winkelman walked for an RBI scoring Jacob Scroggie scored to update the score to 11-4.

Saint Francis sealed the deal as they scored three more runs in the seventh inning off of four runs and four hits for the 15-4 win. 

Game 2: Saint Francis (Ind.) (12), Siena Heights (9) (7 innings)

Both teams scored three runs in the first inning to tie the game 3-3. A. Brunson reached first on an error by shortstop and Valdes-Sa scored. M. McCowin flew out to the left-field for a  sacrifice fly, scored T. Price for an RBI T. B. Harris reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop as K. Sullivan for Saint Francis. Cameron Hammer doubled to left-center for an RBI to score Chris Winkelman. Adam Wilding singled and advanced to second on an error by centerfield scoring Cameron Hammer. Cole VanWasshenova stole second as Adam Wildin scored on the throw.

The Saints took the lead 6-3 in the second inning scoring two runs. Haydn Smith tripled to right-center for an RBI scoring Thomas Lamnek and Devin Hill. Cameron Hammer singled through the left side for an RBI scoring Haydn Smith.

The Cougars scored one run in the third inning, three in the fourth inning, and three in the fifth inning to regain the lead 10-6. Siena scored three runs in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to one run. Deven Hill singled to center field for 2 RBIs and Chris Winkelman grounded out to 3b for an RBI. 

Saint Francis scored two more runs in the sixth inning and after both teams remained scoreless earning them the 12-9 win. Brad South started on the mound for the Saints facing 18 batters and earning two strikeouts while Christian Jabiro closed out the game facing ten batters earning three strikeouts.

The Saints stay home to take on Lawrence Tech in a non-conference single game tomorrow, March 4th. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
