Rio Grande Takes Two From Saints in Opening Day

RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- The Siena Heights baseball team started the 2021 season dropping a doubleheader against the University of Rio Grande for an 0-2 start to the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Rio Grande 7, Siena Heights 3 (7 innings)

The Saints started the game strong in the first inning scoring three runs. Cole VanWasshenova (Fr. | South Rockwood, Mich.) hit a three-run home to left on a 3-1 count, which scored Chris Winkelman (Jr. | Monroe, Mich.) as he reached on a single and scored Cameron Hammer (Fr. | Bedford, Mich.) as he reached on an error. The Red Storm scored one run in the first inning as Clayton Surrell singled to right and scored Caden Culxton.

The score would remain 3-1 with Siena in the lead until the fourth inning when Rio Grande scored one run as Jesse Watson reached on a walk and scored on the ground out to second from Juan Familia to update the score 3-2. 

Rio Grande busted open in the fifth inning scoring four runs. Clayton Surrell was hit by a pitch that scored Zadod Gabriel. Jesse Watson hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Caden Cluxton. Joe Erhard doubled to deep left scoring Kent Reeser and Clayton Surrell to give them the 6-3 lead. 

The Red Storm sealed the deal as they scored one more run in the sixth inning. Zadod Gabriel bunted and reached on a base as Kent Reeser reached on a walk. Kent Reeser advanced to second on a stolen base which scored Zadod Gabriel. The Saints remained scoreless the remainder of the game for the 7-3 loss. 

Game 2: Rio Grande 6, Siena Heights 5 (5 innings)

Rio Grande scored three runs in the first inning. Caden Cluxton reached on a walk as Kent Reeser bunted and reached on a base hit. Resse Watson doubled to left-center that scored Caden Cluxton and Kent Reeser for a 3-0 lead. 

Both teams respectively scored one run in the second inning. Adam Wilding (Fr. | Brooklyn, Mich.) reached base on a single to center and scored off the double to left-center from Matthew Love (Fr. | Macomb, Mich.) for the Saints. Caden Cluxton reached on a walk and scored off a single to center field to give them the 4-1 lead. 

In the third inning, Austin Kendall reached on a double to left and scored off a single to right field from Billy Cooper. Caden Cluxton grounded out to second that scored Darius Jordan to update the score 6-1 for the Red Storm. 

Siena rallied in the fifth inning as they scored four runs to cut the deficit to one run. Wilding scored on Billy Cooper's wild throw. Winkelman double to deep left-center that score Parker Mabe (So. | Fenton, Mich.) and Thomas Lamnek (So. | Locust Grove, Georgia). Hammer singled to right field that scored Winkelman. The game got called early due to rain conditions so the Saints were not able to push for the win getting the 6-5 loss.
