Saints Top Saint Francis (Ind.) in Home Opener

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team won the 2020 season home opener against Saint Francis (Ind.) to win their third straight game, on Thursday afternoon. Trevor Hulvey (Sophomore, Sterling Heights, Mich.) led the Saints as he finished 2-for-4 at the plate earning one RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After two scoreless innings, the Saints struck first as they scored one run in the third inning. Cal Olmstead (Junior, Riga, Mich.) reached on base as he was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a SAC bunt by Cody Henderson (Sophomore, Lewiston, Montana). Cameron Hammer (Freshman, Temperance, Mich.) singled to right field advancing Olmstead to third. Hammer advanced to second on a wild pitch scoring Olmstead to end the inning with the 1-0 lead. 

The Cougars knotted things up as they earned one run in the sixth inning. Gaff reached on base by a walk and then stole second. Gaff advanced to third off a single to centerfield by Valdes-Sando. Valdez-Sando stole second and Franz was hit by a pitch. Craxton also walked scoring Gaff as the Saints ended the inning with a double play.

Siena earned two more runs in the seventh inning. Henderson singled up the middle and advanced to second on a walk by Hammer. Hammer and Henderson both advanced on a bunt by Parker Mabe (Freshman, Fenton, Mich.) as he reached on a fielder's choice. Hulvey singled to left field scoring Henderson while advancing Mabe and Hammer. Jarrett Cousino (Sophomore, Oregon, Ohio) walked scoring Hammer while advancing Hulvey and Mabe to end the game with the 3-1 victory as the next two innings were scoreless.

TOP SAINTS

• Hulvey finished 2-for-4 with one RBI.

• Henderson went 1-1 while scoring one run.

Tristan Roth (Senior, Woodville, Ohio) pitched 5.1 innings allowing four hits and one run while striking out three.

THE OPPOSITION 

• Gaff finished 1-for-2 and scored one run.

• Prince and McCarty respectively went 1-2.

• DeKoninck pitched four innings allowing one hit and run while striking out two.
