Saints Drop Double-Header to 25th-Ranked Campbellsville (Ky.) on First Day of Weekend Series

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Kentucky -- The Siena Heights baseball team dropped a doubleheader on day one of their weekend series against 25th-ranked Campbellsville (Ky.). Cameron Hammer (Freshman, Temperance, Mich.) led the Saints as he went 2-7 (.285) on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Campbellsville (Ky.) def. Siena Heights, 14-0 

The Saints and Tigers battled out a game of defense and pitching as the first three innings as both teams were scoreless while Michael Jones (Senior, Taylor, Mich.) started on the mound for Siena and Alexander Salazar started on the mound for Campbellsville respectively allowing no runs. 

The Tigers came out swinging as they put themselves on the board first and scored 12 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tommy Sepulveda flew out to the left-field to score Jalen Horton. Adbiel Morales singled to center field scoring Tyler Cox. Eddie Artega singled to first base scoring Morales. Cale Thompson singled to right-field scoring Skyler Vail. Lane Kashiwamura scored on an error by the Saints' pitcher. Horton double to left field and earned an RBI as he scored Grant McQueary. Cox reached on an error by Siena's pitcher and McQueary scored while Horton scored on a wild pitch. Sepulvedan doubled to the left-field and Cox scored on an error. Vail singled to left field scoring Sepulveda. Artega doubled to the right field to scored Morales to earn Campbellsville's final run of the inning.

The Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as Kashiwamura walked and advanced to second as Luis Padron was hit by a pitch. Vail singled to right-field as Padron advanced to second and Kashiwamura advanced to third. Artega singled to left field scoring Kashiwamura. Thompson singled to left field as Padron scored. Campbellsville scored all of their hits as they earned 14 and left no one on base.

Siena would struggle the remainder of the game as they only earned one hit in the top of the sixth inning as Parker Mabe (Freshman, Fenton, Mich.) singled to the pitcher and one hit in the top of the eighth inning as Hammer singled to second base. The Saints were unable to put themselves on the board for the game's entirety giving the Tigers the 14-0 victory.

• Jones (L, 0-2) pitched 3.2 innings while striking out two.

Trevor Willis (Senior, Tecumseh, Mich.) pitched 2.0 innings while striking out one.

Jacob Simmers (Junior, New Boston, Mich.) closed on the mound for the Saints as he pitched 1 inning and struck out one.

THE OPPOSITION HITTING

• Artega went 3-5 while earned four RBIs.

• Vail went 3-5 and had one RBIs.

• Thompson went 2-4 and tallied two RBIs.

THE OPPOSITION PITCHING

• Salazar (W,1-0) pitched 8.0 innings while only giving up two hits and striking gout 14.

• Deshawn Welch came in to close for the Tigers and pitched one inning while striking out two.

Game 2: Campbellsville (Ky.) def. Siena Heights, 10-1 (7 innings) 

The Tigers came out ready as they scored four runs in the first inning as Marcus Beeson () started on the mound for the Saints. Cox doubled to the center-field earned two RBIs as he scored Horton and Colton Titus. Sepulvedan doubled to left field scoring Cox for an RBI. Artega reached first on an error by Siena's pitcher and Sepulvedan scored on the catcher throw down to second base.

Campbellsville came out scoring again as Cox doubled to center field scoring Titus for an RBI in the bottom of the second inning and Artega homered in the bottom of the third inning updating the score to 6-0.

Jacob Jackson (Freshman, Ajax, Ontario) started the top of the fourth inning off with a walk. Joe Ellis (Senior, Grosse Point Farms, Mich.) single to right field and Jackson advanced to second. Ellis advanced to second on a wild pitch and Jackson advanced to third. Cody Henderson (Sophomore, Lewiston, Montana) struck out but reached first on an error by the catcher as Ellis advanced to third and Jackson scored putting the Saints on the board.

The Tigers earned four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Vail singled to center field earning an RBI as Titus scored. Artega singled to right field scoring Horton for an RBI. Sepulvedan scored on a passed ball by the catcher and Padron sac flew to center field scoring Vail for an RBI.

Siena was quiet the rest of the game as they were unable to earn any hits giving Campbellsville the 10-1 win. The Saints earned four hits while leaving three on base and making three errors. The Tigers earned nine hits leaving no one on base and making two errors.

• Hunter McIntosh came in to close for the Tigers as he pitched two innings and striking out four.
