Baseball Unable to Hold On Against Davenport

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team fell 5-3 in conference action to Davenport, on Saturday, as the Panthers completed the three-game series sweep.

The Saints (9-15, 9-6 WHAC) opened the scoring in the first inning when Carson Wlad sent Brenden Baker home with a single through center field. DU took the lead for SHU in the top of the fifth, sending two runners home. Davenport added on another in the sixth to make it 3-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, Siena Heights evened the score 3-3 after a string of singles from Matthew Bondy, Kevin Ketvirtis, Freddy Jehle and a two-RBI single from Baker.

Davenport (20-10, 12-3 WHAC) won the game in the ninth inning with two runs after loading the bases.

Starting on the mound for SHU was Erich Klingelhofer who struck out two batters and allowed seven hits and three runs. Ben Finn relieved him in the eighth inning, getting out of a bases loaded situation without allowing any DU runs. In the ninth, Finn allowed two runs before being relieved by Reid Olmstead with one out. Olmstead allowed one hit as Finn suffered the loss.

For the Panthers, Justin Palmbos threw one inning to open the game and allowed one run. Jonathon Cheshire closed out the game with 10 strikeouts, five hits and two runs against, earning the win.

Leading the Saints with two hits was Jehle. Baker had a two-RBI single and scored from a Wlad RBI. Lead-off hitter for DU, Austin Petravicius finished 3-of-4, scoring twice.

SHU will be back in action on Tuesday as the Saints host Saint Francis (Ind.) in a 3 p.m. non-conference double-header.
