Muller's walk off double gives the Saints a split against Cornerstone

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Saints Baseball Team split two exciting games with Cornerstone University Saturday.  The Saints lost the first game, 12-9, after coming back from eight runs down.  In the second game, the Saints won 4-3 on a walk-off double by senior Dan Muller.

Game one turned out to have many turns and twists in the 12-9, nine-inning game.  First, Kyle Kuhr started on the mound and did not allow a hit through three innings.  Then in the fourth, the Golden Eagles were able to get to him as they scored three times.  Cornerstone (15-20, 11-8 WHAC) then added another run in the fifth and four more off Kuhr before he exited in the sixth.

Down 8-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Saints started to rally with a single run that inning.  Siena Heights then had a great six-run inning in the seventh inning to pull within one.  In the bottom of the eighth inning they tied the game and took a 9-8 lead.

The game changed again when Cornerstone scored four runs and won the game 12-9.

Matthew Bondy went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a hit by pitch.  Freddy Jehle, Zack Dunlop, Brendan Green and Ryne Sanders all drove in runs for the Saints.  Ben Finn took the loss on the mound for the Saints.

In game two, a trio of seniors drove the Saints to the 4-3 walk-off win.

First, Brent Vaccarro pitched and allowed only two earned runs, on seven hits and two walks while striking out one over seven innings.  That is Vaccaro's fourth victory of the season.  Second, Travis Stricklin went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and three runs scored, including the game winner.  Lastly, Dan Muller's double in the bottom of the seventh with two outs gave the Saints their final game winning run.  This double came after Muller was hit in the helmet in his previous at bat.

Other notable performances were: Green who went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Nathaniel Kraus who went 1-for-1 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI.

Siena Heights (16-18 overall, 8-11 WHAC) will travel to Adrian on Tuesday for a 5 pm game.  They return home on Wednesday when they host Madonna for a WHAC double header at 2 pm.
