Baseball Splits Two with Cornerstone

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team split the first two games in a four game conference series against Cornerstone. SHU won the first game 6-4 and dropped game two 5-1.

In game one, Cornerstone opened the scoring in the first and third innings, scoring one run in each.

Siena responded in the third inning with a two out rally. Matthew Bondy singled to left field, sending Austin Hauck home. Daniel Muller singled to center field, pushing Brendan Green and Bondy across the plate.

Thomas McCarter kept the bats quiet, allowing no hits for the next three innings. SHU added a run in the bottom of the sixth after Hauck sent John Watts home.

The Golden Eagles added a run in the seventh inning, but the Saints answered in the eighth inning with two more runs. SHU capitalized on CU's mistakes with Stricklin stealing third and coming home from a throwing error and Muller crossing home plate for a fielding error.

Ben Finn and John Kavanagh finished out the game for SHU. Cornerstone fought back, earning one run but it wasn't enough. McCarter earned a win on the mound while Kavanagh took home the save. Ben Sheckler started on the mound but Ryan Harris took the loss for the Golden Eagles.

Cornerstone again opened up the scoring in game two. The Golden Eagles capitalized on a Saint error, allowing the runner to score. The Golden Eagles scored again in the fourth off of a throwing error by SHU.

SHU put up one run in the fifth but it wasn't enough. CU responded, pushing one run across in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Chris McKiddie took the loss on the mound for the Saints. Reid Olmstead and Ashton Budzinski also made appearances on the mound. Justin Geerts pitched the full game for CU, earning the win.

The Saints will play games three and four against Cornerstone on Saturday, at home with a 12 p.m. opening pitch.
