Baseball Finishes 1-2 in Three Game Series with CUAA

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team went 1-2 for the day against conference opponent Concordia on Sunday. Final scores were 5-4 Concordia, 6-1 Siena, and Concordia took the last game 2-1 in nine innings.

In the first inning on game one, each team pushed one run across the plate.

Both teams found success in the third inning. Concordia scored four while SHU added two runs. Zack Dunlop sent Freddy Jehle and Austin Forsythe home with a double down the left field line.

In the bottom of the sixth, Jehle hit a double through left center to bring in Alex Robbins, but it wasn't enough for the Saints to pull off the win.

Thomas McCarter threw the first 6.1 innings of game one for Siena. He gave up nine hits, one earned run (five total) and earned one strikeout. He was relieved by Ben Finn who faced two batters, making them fly out and ground out.

CUAA (17-7, 9-1) game one winning pitcher Jon Targus allowed five hits and two earned runs (three total) and threw four strikeouts. Keith Phillips threw for the save, only allowing three hits and earned one strikeout.

In game two, the first four innings went scoreless for both teams.

Jeremy Maas tripled down the right field line to send Jacob Maas home in the fifth, earning the solo run for CUAA in game two.

The Saints had a big sixth inning and scored six runs with Dunlop, Travis Stricklin, Carson Wlad and Austin Hauck earning RBIs.

Kyle Kuhr had the win for the Saints on the mound, allowing six hits, one run and struck out four batters. Finn earned the save, pitching to five batters and striking out two.

For CUAA, Blake Kuszmaul took the loss, allowing seven hits, five earned runs (six total) and had two strikeouts.

An intense game three was almost the perfect end to a long day of baseball.

Concordia went up 1-0 in the third inning with a single by Blaine Milheim that brought in Jacob Maas.

Siena responded in the fifth with a Brendan Green single through center field that sent Jehle home.

The Saints loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth but couldn't capitalize on the situation.

In the ninth inning, the Cardinals had a base hit to center field with a runner on third and one out. From center field, Stricklin sent the ball home where Bradley Connochie tagged the runner out, holding the 1-1 score with two outs. The same situation happened the next batter, but the runner scored and put CUAA up 2-1.

The Saints (11-13, 4-7) couldn't rally, dropping two of three games in the series against Concordia.

Justin McPherson started on the mound for SHU, pitching five innings allowing five hits and one run, also earning six strikeouts. Taking the loss was Reid Olmstead after pitching four innings, allowing six hits and one run. Olmstead struck out four batters.

Jimmy McKane won for the Cardinals after pitching two innings. He threw three strikeouts and faced eight batters.

The Saints will host Cleary on Wednesday for a non-conference double-header starting at 2 p.m.
