Baseball Sweeps Marygrove; Start Conference 2-0

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Saints baseball team got their started the conference schedule with two victories over Marygrove on Wednesday. The Saints won game one 10-3 and then rallied in game two to win 5-3.

In game one, the Saints took advantage of a couple errors by the Mustangs in the first inning and took an early lead. Siena Heights scored five runs in the first, which gave starting pitcher Brent Vaccaro all the support he would need. 

After the Saints scored a solo run in the third inning, Marygrove plated two runs to make the score 6-2. SHU answered with a run on their own in the bottom of the fourth. The game remained that way until the eighth inning when Marygrove scored once and the Saints added three more runs themselves. The Saints won by a final score of 10-3.

Vaccaro pitched 7.2 innings for his second win of the season. He struck out seven batters while allowing just one earned run on five hits. Ben Finn finished the game for Vaccaro striking out one over one and a third innings of work. 

Nathaniel Kraus led the Saints as he went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Austin Forsythe also drove in two runs, but he scored twice himself on a 1-for-4 performance.  Connor Wlad collected two hits and drove in a run in three at bats. Joe Williams and Daniel Muller also picked up RBIs for the Saints.

In game two, both teams scored a run in the first inning. Marygrove (1-13, 0-2) then scored single runs in the third inning and sixth innings to take a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth. 

With two out in the sixth inning the Saints were finally able to break through. Matthew Bondy pounded a double and then Travis Stricklin, Kraus and Bradley Connochie all drew walks to get the Saints within one run. Freddy Jehle then hit a grounder to first and the Mustangs bobbled the first baseman to pitcher exchange; making Jehle safe at first and scoring two runs for the Saints. Austin Forsythe then added a single and an insurance run for the Saints. Siena Heights scored four runs in the sixth to win 5-3.

Thomas McCarter threw six innings to pick up his second win of the season. He struck out three batters, allowed three runs (one earned), and walked none. Ben Finn came on in the seventh inning to collect his second save of the season. 

Bondy went 2-for-3 for the Saints while Connochie, and Forsythe collected RBI's. 

Siena Heights pushes their record to 9-6 overall and 2-0 in WHAC. The Saints will return to action on Saturday when they host Northwestern Ohio at 1 p.m.
