Baseball Takes Two Against Lourdes

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team swept a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader with 7-0 and 12-3 wins over Lourdes (Ohio) on Saturday at the SHU Baseball Diamond.

Thomas McCarter was the winning pitcher in game one as he tossed a three-hit shutout. McCarter finished with three strikeouts and two walks.

Carson Wlad batted 2-for-4 with a triple, double, one run and three RBI. Austin Hauck added a 2-for-4 game with two runs. Freddy Jehle also scored twice.

The Saints (7-9, 3-3) scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back. Travis Stricklin got SHU on the board with an RBI single before Wlad ripped a two-run double and Zack Dunlop had a two-run single. SHU pushed across its first five runs without recording an out.

Siena Heights tacked on two more runs -- on a second-inning RBI single by Joe Williams and another on a fourth-inning RBI triple by Wlad.

Lourdes' Nate Snow as credited as the losing pitcher.

In game two, Drew Milligan led the SHU offense with a 4-for-4 game. He doubled twice, scored twice and drove in four runs.

Both Wlad and Dennis Sharp Jr. went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI each. Williams batted 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI. Hauck doubled and scored two runs.

Kyle Burkholder was the winning pitcher for SHU. He worked five innings, allowing five hits, two hit batsmen and one walk. Of the three runs scored against Burkholder, two were earned. Relief pitcher Justin McPherson threw two shutout innings.

The Saints took a 1-0 lead ona Jehle groundout before falling behind, 3-1, after the visitors' 3-1 fifth. SHU then erupted for 11 unanswered runs -- eight in the fifth and three in the sixth -- to walk away with the win.

SHU drew even at 3-all on back-to-back bases-loaded walks by Hauck and Striklin. A two-run single by Williams gave the hosts the lead and then Sharp had an RBI single, Dunlop smacked a sacrifice fly and Milligan roped a two-run double to give the Saints a 9-3 advantage after five.

In the sixth, Wlad had an RBI single and Milligan smacked a two-run single.

Nick Toth was Lourdes' leading hitter, going 3-for-4. Tyler Trame tripled. Ryan Veres was the losing pitcher.

The Saints will return to action on Wednesday with two WHAC home games against Marygrove, beginning at 2 p.m.
