Baseball Splits WHAC Doubleheader With Lourdes

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights baseball team split a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader with Lourdes (Ohio) on Friday, winning the first game 4-1 before dropping the second 4-0, at the SHU Baseball Diamond.

Both Freddy Jehle and Travis Stricklin batted 2-for-4 with a double in the nine-inning opener. Stricklin had a run and an RBI. Carson Wlad also doubled for the Saints (5-9, 1-3).

Winning pitcher Brent Vaccaro went the distance, allowing one run on six hits. He recorded four strikeouts, two walks and one hit batsman.

Lourdes took the game's first leading, going ahead 1-0 in the third frame, before SHU tacked on two runs in both the third and fourth innings.

Eric Henderson ripped an RBI single and then Drew Milligan had an RBI groundout as the Saints grabbed a 2-1 advantage.

In the SHU fourth, Stricklin smacked an RBI double and Austin Hauck hit a run-scoring single.

Frank Shaffer was the losing pitcher for the Gray Wolves (5-9, 1-1). He went six innings and gave up four runs on seven hits before reliever Brandon Holt tossed two scoreless frames.

Nick Toth batted 2-for-4 for Lourdes.

During the seven-inning nightcap, the Saints were blanked by Lourdes pitcher Drew Lepiarz, who tossed a three-hitter and finished with nine strikeouts, one walk and one hit batsman.

The Wolves scored twice in the first and tacked on solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Tayler Thelen suffered the loss for SHU. He worked all seven innings and gave up six hits. Of the four runs scored on Thelen, two were earned. He finished with four strikeouts, four walks and one hit batter.

Hauck doubled for the Siena Heights offense.

For Lourdes, Toth went 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI. Garrett Jex was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Saints and Gray Wolves will wrap up their four-game WHAC series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
