Shelly Vanderveen is one of a few former Siena Heights University athletes who have competed at national championship events in two sports for the Saints.  One of the greatest all-around athletes in the school's history, Vanderveen was an honorable mention All-American soccer player in 1990.  She was a hard-nosed midfielder on the only two SHU women's soccer teams (1988 & 1990) to compete at the NAIA National Championships.  Vanderveen ranks #5 all-time in career scoring for the Saints with 102 points (34 goals/34 assists).

As a first baseman on the Saints' softball team, Shelly was a two-time All-District #23 Team selection.  She led the team in batting as a junior in 1990 with a .354 average.  As a senior, she was a key player on the Saints' District #23 and national-qualifying team (the only SHU softball team to ever advance to the national tournament).

Vanderveen was the female recipient of the 1990 Thomas A. Emmet Award, which is presented annually to the top male & female student-athletes at Siena Heights University (based on athletic, academic & extra-curricular achievements).

Shelly was named to two NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete teams in soccer (1990) and softball (1991).

In addition to her athletic achievements while at Siena Heights, Vanderveen was a Student Senate representative, a member of the Sigma Kappa Alpha Honor Society, a Campus Security officer and a reporter for the school newspaper.

A police officer with the Claremont (CA) Police Department, Shelly was named the department's "Officer-of-the-Year" in 1998.

She has participated in the World Police Olympics in Sweden as well as State Police Olympics in Nevada, Arizona and California.  Shelly has won gold medals in the sports of boxing, tennis (doubles) and softball; a silver medal in tennis (singles); and bronze medals in softball and soccer.
