The following was printed on Dave Sagaert's HOF
plaque:
Dave Sagaert came to Siena Heights in 1983 as a National Junior
College Athletic Association All-American goalkeeper from Macomb
Community College. One of SHU Hall of Fame Coach Doug
Mello’s first recruits, Sagaert made the Saints instantly
competitive in the program’s first two seasons of varsity
competition.
Sagaert made 135 saves and posted five shutouts in the
Saints’ inaugural season in ’83 and led them to a
surprising 10-8-1 overall record and runner-up finish in NAIA
District #23. As a senior in 1984, Sagaert helped the Saints
improve to 11-4-4 overall and another second-place finish in NAIA
District #23 play.
One of the most outstanding student-athletes in the early
history of Siena Heights athletics, Sagaert earned NAIA Academic
All-American honors as a senior. He is also a member of the
Macomb Community College athletic Hall of Fame; and was named
Macomb’s Outstanding Varsity Athlete in 1981-82 when he
guided their soccer team to NJCAA State and Regional
Championships.
