Tonight we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first team in the history of Siena Heights University athletics to compete at a NAIA National Championship.  Coached by Fred Smith and assisted by long-time Siena Heights cross country and track & field coach Tim Bauer, the 1983 Saints cross country team was the first team to represent Siena Heights University at a national championship.

The Saints placed 18th overall in their first trip to the national championships in Kenosha, Wisconsin.  The ’83 team was paced by two-time NAIA Cross Country All-American and SHU Hall of Fame inductee Jim Miller (Class of ’01) and NAIA Track & Field All-American and SHU Hall of Fame runner John Detro (inaugural HOF Class of ’99).
Other members of the 1983 Siena Heights cross country team included Ron Bingham, Don Fiero, Ken Garron, Adam Gibson, Pat Hickey, Patrick Irwin, Jeff Myers, Tom Paonessa, Al Partee, Paul Schmidt and Wayne Younglove.
