The following was printed on the 1985 Men's Soccer Team's HOF plaque:

The 1985 Siena Heights University men’s soccer team had sixteen underclassmen (eight freshmen and eight sophomores) on its 21-man roster.  Like head coach Doug Mello, the Saints were young, brash and confident.

In just their third year as a varsity program, the ’85 Saints won the NAIA District #23 championship and the Area VI title.  Despite a pair of shutout losses to soccer powerhouses Rockhurst College and the College of Boca Raton at the NAIA National Championships, the Saints accomplished something no other Siena Heights men’s soccer team has ever done by winning an area/region championship and competing in the national tournament.

Jared Rose led the team in scoring as a freshman, and SHU Hall of Famer and former professional star Andrew Crawford was also a key ingredient in the team’s success.  The core of this team would go on to win two more District championships and finish second in the 1987 and 1988 Area VI championships.
