The following was printed on Joe Dettling's HOF
plaque:
Perhaps the greatest all-around basketball player in the
Saints’ storied history, Joe Dettling was a tremendous
scorer, rebounder, shot-blocker and big-game player. A
three-time All-Conference center for the Saints, Dettling was a key
ingredient in the Saints’ 1996-97 team which placed second in
the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship
Tournament.
Dettling was one of four Saints named to the All-Tournament Team
at the ’97 national tournament, where he led all tournament
players with 51 rebounds and twelve blocked shots. While the
Saints were having their best national tournament run, Dettling
became the only Siena Heights player in the program’s history
to reach 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds in his career.
An honorable mention All-American for the Saints in 1994,
Dettling was also named to the All-WHAC Conference Defensive Team
twice. He shared team MVP honors with Derrick Bryant in
1995.
