The following was printed on John Detro's HOF
plaque:
Perhaps the best distance runner in Siena Heights track &
field history, Detro was a four-time NAIA track & field
All-American and three-time All-American Scholar-Athlete for the
Saints. He was twice an outdoor All-American in the
steeplechase and holds the school record in that event with a time
of 8:58.3 (set in ’85).
Detro was a two-time NAIA Indoor Track All-American in the
three-mile event and a member of the first Siena Heights College
cross country team to compete at the NAIA National
Championships.
An outstanding student while at Siena Heights, John was one of
the first recipients of the Thomas A. Emmet Awards (’84) as
the top male student-athlete in his junior year.
A physician’s assistant for the U.S. Army’s
75th Ranger Regiment and 3rd Battalion at
Fort Benning, GA, Detro has participated in the World Military
Cross Country Championships three times and won several races while
representing the U.S. Armed Forces.
