Women's Volleyball Drops Two Matches in Five Sets

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's volleyball team dropped two matches that each went into a fifth set on Saturday. The Saints fell to Goshen (Ind.) in the first match before a loss to IU-South Bend ended the evening. Janel Ruhlman () led the Saints attack with 33 kills total for the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Saints gave up a 25-15 decision in set four after leading the match 2-1. The Maple Leafs capitalized in the deciding set with a 16-14 victory to take the win. In the second match of the day, Siena also led 2-1 before the Titans of IUSB won set four, 25-18 to force a fifth set. IUSB edged Siena 15-11 in that set to take a victory.

In both matches, the Saints struggled in the fourth set as they were the only sets on the day that Siena hit below zero as a team. SHU had three sets against Goshen with double-digit kills (16,17, and 11) along with three against the Titans (15,11, and 15).

TOP SAINTS

• Ruhlman led the Saints with 17 kills against Goshen. She followed that performance up with another 16 kills against IUSB. She was also a force on the defensive side of the ball as she totaled 33 digs (12+21) on the day.

Carrigan Gray () had 47 assists in the first match and added another 42 in the second to set the tone for the SHU attack.

Karsyn Wolf () finished with a team-high 17 digs against the Maple Leafs and 20 against the Titans.

Victoria Nerkowski () totaled eight blocks between the two matches.

THE OPPOSITION

• Goshen Leaders: Jennifer Ritchie - 13 kills and 18 digs, Ally Roehr - 41 assists.

• IUSB Leaders: Hannah Marchand - 19 kills, McKenzie Powell - 40 assists, Samantha Hockstra - 26 digs.

The Saints begin conference play on Wednesday, September 11 when they travel to face Madonna. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m., EDT.
