Softball Sweeps a Pair from Cross Town Foe Adrian

The Siena Heights Softball Team travelled across town to Adrian College and came away with two wins, a 9-1 win and a 7-6 come from behind win.

In game one, the Saints took the lead in the second inning plating two runs.  Adrian pulled to within one run in the 3rd, but a seven run fifth inning created the five inning run rule game.  The Saints out hit the Bulldogs by a 9-2 margin.  Leading the way for the Saints were three hitters with two hits a piece, Kelsey Cherry, Racquel Ward, and Skylar Crenshaw.  Each of the trio also had multiple RBI with Cherry and Crenshaw each knocking in two runs, and Ward driving in three.  Jordan Bianchi and Taylor Mowery each had an RBI on the game as well with Kris Forest, Kristi Carlson, and Mowery each adding a hit.  Forest, Ward, and Crenshaw each had doubles in the game. On the mound Ward threw the complete game, allowing only two hits and striking out five Bulldogs.

In game two, Adrian jumped out to a two run lead after one inning – they tacked on two more runs to create a four run cushion in the 4th.  The Saints responded with four runs to tie the game in the fifth before Adrian scored two more to retake the lead in the bottom of the 5th.  However, the comeback started over again with the Saints tacking on two runs in the 6th to tie the game and a solo run in the 7th to provide the game winner.

Ashley Helmink provided the big bat as the only Saint with multiple hits, notching a double and a two run homerun.  Cherry added a homerun and two RBI, Hayley Turk added a solo homerun, with Crenshaw, Carlson, Forest, and Bailee Taylor accounting for the other Saints hits.  Lauren Valdez started on the mound and threw the first five innings, allowing six runs and striking out four.  Lauren Best came on in relief throwing the final two innings, striking out three and earning her first collegiate win.

With the wins, the Saints move to 10-6 on the season and will look to return to action on Thursday with a WHAC doubleheader with Lourdes.  Game time will be announced on Wednesday for the rescheduled game.
