Women's Volleyball Defeats Olivet Nazarene and Cumberlands at Aquinas/Cornerstone Classic

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's volleyball team competed in day one of the Aquinas/Cornerstone Classic where they faced off against Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) and Cumberlands (Ky.) on Friday. The Saints won both matches by scores of 3-1 and 3-0 respectively. 

In match one against Olivet Nazarene (16-10), SHU dropped the first set before finally heating up and winning three straight to grab the match win. Set scores were 23-25, 25-21, 25-21 and 26-24.

Leading the Saints (19-3) was Abby Whitehead with 13 kills, followed by Christine Tylutki with 12 and Libby Breton with 10. Taylor Purcell finished with a team high six blocks while Breton and Tylutki each added five blocks each. Gabrielle Kalugar led the Saints with 20 digs, while Amanda Metz dished out 42 assists and added 13 digs. 

In match two of the night, Siena Heights defeated Cumberlands (11-11) in three sets with set scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-20.

Finishing with a team high, 12 kills was Tylutki followed by Breton with 11 and Paige Hudgin who added 10 and 15 digs. Metz led the Saints again with 39 assists, while Kalugar finished with a team high 17 digs. Metz, Breton, Whitehead and Purcell all contributed two blocks for Siena Heights. 

The Saints will be back in action tomorrow as they compete in day two of the Aquinas/Cornerstone Classic. SHU will face off against Taylor at 10 a.m., and Indiana-South Bend at 1 p.m.
