Women's Volleyball Tops IU South Bend at Aquinas/Cornerstone Classic

The Siena Heights Women's Volleyball Team won both matches at the Aquinas/Cornerstone Classic, defeating Indiana University South Bend in four sets, then defeating Governors State in four sets as well.

The Saints dropped the first set in a back and forth close set, falling 25-22.  In the second set, much the same occurred, with neither team holding more than a three point lead.  The Saints fought off three set points and came from behind to win the set 28-26.  In the third set, the Saints got out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back, taking the third set 25-8.  After hitting a meager .062 in set two, the Saints hit a whopping .481 in the 3rd set.  In the fourth set, SHU took the set 25-20, and had another great hitting game, with an attacking percentage of .400.

Leading the way for the Saints was Paige Hudgin with 17 kills and a .395 hitting percentage.  Libby Breton added nine kills and a .391 hitting percentage.  Amanda Metz had 41 assists for the Saints and also led the team in digs with 14.  Gabrielle Kalugar added 14 digs of her own and Hudgin added 13.  Ashleigh Shay had five assisted blocks and Taylor Purcell added four.  Taylor Felver had two aces.

Against Governors State, it was a familiar story as the Saints dropped a back and forth first set by a score of 25-23.  The Saints took set two 25-10 before battling for a 27-25 win in the third set.  The fourth set ended with a score of 25-18.

For the game, Hudgin led the team with 20 kills.  Metz added 43 assists and two aces.  Kalugar led the team with 28 digs while Hudgin added 13 of her own.

With the win, the Saints move to 18-7 on the season.  They will return to action next week with a conference game at Davenport on Wednesday before a Friday night home game with Madonna.
