Women's Track & Field Ends the19 Year Drought with a WHAC Championship Title

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The fourth-ranked Siena Heights women's track and field team edged out top-ranked Indiana Tech in the WHAC Championship Track & Field Meet on Friday to earn the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Title. This victory put an end to 19-year drought since the Saints last conference title in 1997.

Siena Heights had nine All-Conference Performances, 21 top three finishers and 34 performances finishing in the top six to bring in points for the Saints.

As a team, SHU took first place with 212.5 points while Indiana Tech finished second with 205 points. Rounding out the top three was Aquinas with 142 points.

The 2016 WHAC Women's Track & Field Coach of the Year, Kirk Richards had this to say about the Saints success, "The girls believed in themselves and they've been working hard all year, they knew they had a shot at it. Everybody did their best and a dream came true."

Stephanie Marquardt finished first in the 100m hurdles by besting her previous time for a PR of 13.55 seconds. She is currently ranked first in the NAIA.

In the 400m hurdles, Jalesia Johnson took the top spot in 1:04.92.

Taking the top-spot in the WHAC and NAIA was Phoenix Duncan in the high jump. She cleared 5-10.5 (1.79m) for first place and a PR. Marissa Johnson finished second, clearing 5-8.75 (1.75m).

The McKinley twins were dominant in the pole vault. Sheila McKinley earned a PR, No. 2 NAIA rank and first place with a vault over 12-5.5 (3.80m). Tasha McKinley cleared 12.15 (3.70m) for second place.

Madison Pierce took first place in the long jump, flying 19-6.25 (5.95m) for a PR and second place ranking in the NAIA.

SHU took the top two spots in the triple jump. Mildrenae Young-Brooks earned first with a 37-10.25 (11.54m) jump, followed by Charlena Williams with an 36-2.50 (11.04m) jump.

Kasey Renshaw earned first place in both the shot put and the hammer throw. She threw 46-00 (14.02m) in the shot put and 189-00 (57.62m) in the hammer throw.

Ashley O'Neill took home first in the discus and third in the hammer throw. Her performance in the discus, a 147-0 (44.82m) toss, earned her the eighth spot in the NAIA and a PR. Another PR came in the hammer throw with a distance of 156-5 (47.69m).

Rebecca Cousineau finished with a pair of top three performances. In the hammer throw, she took second with a 157-6 (48.01m) toss and finished third in the discus with a 134-3.75 (40.94m) throw.

Bobbie Goodwin finished second in the discus for a PR of 140-2 (42.72m).

Tina Miller took home second in the javelin with a 118-10 (36.22m) toss.

Haley Hudson finished second and third in the shot put and the javelin, respectively. A 45-2.5 (13.78m) toss in the shot put earned her a No. 7 NAIA rank and PR. In the javelin, she threw 107-5.25 (32.75m).

Mariah Ridal finished the 800m run in 2:17.78 to take third place.

The 4x100m relay team earned third place, finishing in 48.12 seconds. Team members were Olivia Dameron, J. Johnson, Marquardt, and Young-Brooks.

For Siena Heights, Phoenix Duncan and Stephanie Marquardt won the WHAC Outstanding Performer award, both taking a top rank in the NAIA.

Mariah Ridal was named to the WHAC Champions of Character team.

Next up, the Saints will travel to the NAIA Championship Meet in Gulf Shores, Alabama on May 26-28.
