Saints Advance to Championship Game After Blowout Win Over Wright State-Lake

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's basketball team advanced to the championship game of the SHU Thanksgiving Tournament after a dominating 100-32 win over Wright State-Lake. Sharmaine Wills tallied her first double-double of the year with a 16 point, 10 rebound performance to help propel the Saints to the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Saints defense smothered the Lakers in the first quarter by tallying eight steals and forcing 12 turnovers. Siena outscored Wright State Lake 25-5 in the opening 10 minutes. Wills was the leading scorer in the first quarter with eight points. She also hauled in six of her 10 rebounds in the quarter.

Peyton Banks led the Siena in the second with seven points. The Lakers turned the ball over nine times, six of which were the result of SHU steals. The Saints put another 37 points on the scoreboard while holding Wright State Lake to only five points for a 62-10 halftime lead.

The Lakers played much better coming out of the break as they limited their turnovers to just two and scored 11 points while holding Siena to 19. Mikayla Stump made three three-point jumpers to lead Wright State Lake with nine points. 

The final quarter was dominated by the Saints as they burned clock with long possessions to finish the rout. Siena added another six steals to bring their game total to 21. The Saints outscored the Lakers 55-2 in points off turnovers, 21-3 in second-chance points, 62-4 in points in the paint, 18-0 in fastbreak points, and a staggering 61-0 in bench points.

TOP SAINTS

• Wills shot 6-13 from the floor in the win. Seven of her rebounds came on the offensive end of the ball.

Alyssa Larson and Peyton Banks each tallied 14 points. Larson was a perfect 7-7 shooting while Banks was 4-5 including 2-2 from beyond the arc. Banks led the team with three steals.

Demi Russell tallied nine points and six rebounds. She also led the team with two blocks.

THE OPPOSITION

• Mikayla Stump led the Lakers with 18 points on 6-11 shooting, all from the beyond the arc.

• Kelsie Hunt was the team's leading rebounder with six. She also led the team with three assists.

UP NEXT

The Saints will play St. Xavier (Ill.) tomorrow at 4:00 p.m., ET in the Siena Heights University Thanksgiving Tournament championship game.
