Women's Basketball Wins Battle Over Michigan-Dearborn in WHAC Action

DEARBORN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's volleyball team traveled to take on Michigan-Dearborn in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contest on Saturday. The Saints were able to hang on for the 56-54 victory to improve their overall record to 12-10 on the season and 6-7 in WHAC play.

The Wolverines opened the contest on a 9-0 run and did not allow the Saints to score for more than the first five minutes of the ball game. In the second quarter, Siena Heights responded with a run of their own, holding Michigan-Dearborn at 17 points for six minutes and were able to tie the score with 3:55 left in the first half. The Wolverines went on another ten point run to end the first half and entered the break with a 17-27 advantage.

The Saints trailed for the entire third period but worked their way back and eventually regained the lead, two seconds into the fourth quarter, 41-40 on a three point basket made by Addyson Tomczak. The Wolverines led one more time but SHU took their final lead of the contest with 7:43 to go and was able to hang on from there.

From the floor, SHU connected on 21-53 (39.6%) of their attempts, 7-21 (33.3%) from three and 7-12 (58.3%) from the free throw line. Michigan-Dearborn (6-17, 1-13 WHAC) finished 18-54 (33.3%) from the field, 9-24 (37.5%) from behind the arc and 9-13 (69.2%) from the charity stripe.

Three Saints scored in double-figures, leading the way was Haley Hoffman with a career high of 13 points. Taylar McNeal contributed a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while Azalea Miller tacked on another 11 points and dished out eight assists.

Jeorgia Jones finished with a team high, 15 points for Michigan-Dearborn, closely followed by Sade Lemons with 14. Meredith Williams pulled down ten rebounds.

Next up, the Saints will host Northwestern-Ohio on Wednesday, Jan. 24 in a WHAC match-up. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
