Women's Basketball Falls to Aquinas in WHAC Contest

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Siena Heights women's basketball team traveled to take on Aquinas in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday. The SHU Saints dropped the contest in it's first game of the New Year, 63-54. The loss snapped the Saints' five game winning streak that closed out 2017. 

After the first period, Siena Heights (10-8, 4-5 WHAC) held on to a one point lead. The second quarter is where AQ was able to grab the lead and open the gap as they scored 20 points in the frame to the 11 scored by SHU. 

With 6:48 remaining in the fourth quarter, SHU cut the lead to two points putting the score at 48-50. With Siena Heights creeping back, Aquinas called a timeout, then went on a 9-0 run to regain control. 

The Siena Heights post duo of Demi Russell and Alyssa Larson, led SHU in scoring with 15 and 12 respectively. Clara Waidley added 11 points and a team high and a career high, nine assists. Leading the Saints on the glass was Taylar McNeal with ten rebounds. 

Aquinas (11-6, 6-2 WHAC) was led offensively by Katie Theut with 15 points. Michaela Faber added 13 points and grabbed a team high nine rebounds. Momo Neal dished out a team high five assists on the night. 

From the floor, Siena Heights knocked down 24-60 (40%) attempts, 5-20 (25%) from three and 1-11 (9.1%) from the free throw line. Aquinas finished 21-60 (35%) from the field, 9-23 (39.1%) from behind the arc and 12-19 (63.2%) from the charity stripe. 

Next up, the Saints will host Lourdes on Wednesday, Jan. 10 in a WHAC contest. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
