Women's Basketball Defeats Governors State in Non-Conference Contest

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. -- The Siena Heights women's basketball team traveled to take on Governors State in a non-conference contest on Wednesday and came away with the 58-48 victory. The Saints have now won three straight and improve to 8-7 overall on the season. 

The scored 21 points in the first period and held the Jaguars to 12 in the frame, now allowing a point from GSU for the final 4:17 of the first quarter and rattling off an 11-0 run to give themselves a 21-12 advantage. Governors State battled and brought the score to within three, with 6:40 remaining in the first half, but the Saints were able to pour on another 11-0 run and increase the margin again and enter halftime with a 14 point lead. 

In the second half, the Jaguars continued to battle and challenge the Saints, eventually coming back to within three points with 4:26 left in the contest. The Next bucket was scored by Siena Heights and the Saints walked off with the ten point victory. 

The Saints were led by Sharmaine Wills with 13 points and added seven rebounds. Azalea Miller added 12 points and three assists, while Addyson Tomczak and Haley Hoffman each contributed ten points. Clara Waidley finished with a team high, eight rebounds and Tomczak dished out a team high five assists. Alyssa Larson helped protect the paint, leading SHU with three blocks. 

From the floor, Siena Heights finished 20-58 (34.5%), 6-22 (27.3%) from three and 12-19 (63.2%) from the charity stripe. Governors State connected on 17-58 (29.3%) attempts from the field, 2-11 (18.2%) from behind the arc and 12-20 (60%) from the free throw line. 

Next up, the Saints will host Alma in a non-conference contest on Friday, Dec. 22. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
