Wirth Double-Double Helps Women's Hoops to Season-Opening Win

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Lauren Wirth finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds as the Siena Heights women's basketball team outlasted Spring Arbor, 74-64, in non-conference action on Wednesday at the SHU Fieldhouse.

April Watson tacked on 12 points and six rebounds on the night, while Azalea Miller and Jaaliyah Arrington both had 10 points. Arrington added six rebounds while Miller hauled down five.

Also for the Saints (1-0), Arrington dished four assists and had one block and one steal.

Siena Heights took the early lead, leading 24-15 at the end of the first quarter. The Saints maintained this lead with help from Sharmaine Wills, who made three layups to extend Siena Heights' lead to 43-28 going into intermission.

The Cougars (2-1) battled back in the third and fourth quarters -- two jumpers by Kylie Townsley and one from Rachel Driesenga -- to bring the Saints' lead down to eight. Siena Heights eventually led 60-44 at the end of the third quarter.

Spring Arbor went on 14-0 run in the fourth quarter. During the stretch, Faith Johnson sank three jump shots and a three-pointer for the Cougars.

Wirth silenced the run, snagging a defensive rebound and finishing with a layup. The Saints maintained control of the game from there on out, going on a 10-0 streak of their own, led by Lauren Wirth with seven points and two rebounds.

The leading scorer for the Cougars was Townsley with 18 points.

The Saints will be back in action for the Annual Hunger Game on Saturday, Nov. 14, against Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opponent Concordia. Tipoff will take place at 5:30 p.m.
