Tomasik's Winner Helps #21 Women's Basketball Claim Two-Seed in WHAC Tourney

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Mackenzie Tomasik scored the game-winner with 34 seconds left as the 21st-ranked Siena Heights women's basketball team edged Aquinas, 61-60, for a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory on Sunday. With the win, SHU claimed the No. 2 seed in the WHAC Tournament.

Sierra Calhoun was the visiting Saints' leading scorer, finishing with 23 points and six rebounds. Tomasik had 14 points and seven rebounds while Alexxis Knannlein compiled 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Saints (24-6, 18-4).

Siena Heights led 32-30 through the first half, which featured 10 lead changes. Ten more lead changes occurred in the second half. SHU's largest second-half lead was five points.

A pair of free throws by Aquinas' Allison Heberlein gave the hosts a 58-57 advantage with 1:38 remaining in the contest. Ebony Harvey answered for SHU on the following possession, putting Siena ahead, 59-58.

A two-point basket by Katie Theut helped Aquinas (11-19, 10-12) to its final lead with 57 seconds remaining and set the stage for Tomasik's game-winner.

Tomasik was fouled on her go-ahead shot and then missed the ensuing free throw. Harvey rebounded the basketball, but a SHU turnover/Aquinas steal allowed the hosts one final opportunity with 11 seconds left. Heberlein missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Theut had 14 points as Aquinas' top scorer. Heberlein and Kelsey Spitzley added 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Chelsea Matley totaled nine rebounds, six steals and four assists.

The two Saint teams will meet again on Wednesday for a WHAC Tournament quarterfinal. The matchup will be a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at the SHU Fieldhouse. Aquinas is the seventh-seed squad.
