Softball Opens Home Field, Drops Pair To Trinity Christian

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights softball team lost a pair of non-conference games in its home opener on Wednesday at Christensen Memorial Softball Field. The Saints lost to Trinity Christian, 5-4 in nine innings, and 14-10.

The Saints (3-14) will return to action on Thursday with a 4 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at cross-town rival Adrian.

 

Game one: Trinity Christian 5, SHU 4 (9 innings)

Courtnee Chappetta and Eva Curtis had two hits apiece in the extra-inning affair. Chappetta had a double and Curtis' hits were a homer and a triple.

Emma Marshall and Ellie Thelen added doubles for the Saints.

Shyann Truax went all nine innings in the circle, finishing with six strikeouts and two walks.

SHU took a 2-1 lead in the second inning on RBI doubles by Marshall and Thelen. The Trolls then answered with two runs in the third and one in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.

SHU tied the game at 4-4 with runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Curtis hammered a round-tripper before a Chappetta sacrifice fly knotted the game.

The game-winning RBI was scored on an RBI double by Trinity's Giulia Cianfriglia.

 

Game two: Trinity Christian 14, SHU 10

The Saints led 8-3 before the visiting Trolls plated eight runs in the fourth. Trinity Christian led the rest of the way from there.

Curtis continued to swing a hot bat, collecting three hits including a double. She scored two runs and drove in two more.

Maddie Herrera had two hits, including a double, and scored twice. Kat Moreau also had two hits and two runs. Alexis Hirst homered while Truax and Thelen doubled.

The Saints took a 3-2 lead with their three-run first inning. Curtis had an RBI single and Truax ripped an RBI double during the frame.

After TC pulled even at 3-3, SHU rattled off five runs in its half of the second, starting with a solo bomb from Hirst. Chappetta had a sac fly and Thelen smashed an RBI double as the Saints grabbed a five-run lead.

The Trolls scored the next 11 runs, starting with their eight-run fourth. They tacked on three more in the sixth.

SHU scored once in the sixth on an RBI single by Curtis. Moreau plated a run via sac fly in the seventh.

Aila Johnson started for SHU on the rubber and worked the first three innings. Sydnee Hazlett provided 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief late in the game.
