Nordstrom Grand Slam Helps Softball to Split with Aquinas

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Amy Nordstrom hit a grand slam to help the Siena Heights softball team split a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference double-header against Aquinas, on Sunday. SHU fell 10-4 in game one and won 7-3 in the second game of the day.

Aquinas (30-12, 9-3 WHAC) opened the scoring early in game one with a lone run, which was quickly answered by Siena Heights with an Ashley Helmink homerun to even the score. In the fourth inning, AQ scored two runs followed by three runs for SHU with help from a Helmink double. Aquinas took charge in the sixth and seventh innings, scoring three and four runs, respectively, to put it out of reach for SHU.

Leading SHU with two RBIs and going 3-for-4 in the batter's box was Helmink. Kris Forest went 2-for-4 for Siena Heights. AQ was led by Wila as she went 2-for-4.

Taking the loss in the circle for Siena Heights (17-13, 9-7 WHAC) was Racquel Ward, throwing the complete game while allowing nine hits and five earned runs. Starting for Aquinas was Marisa Loya, allowing six hits and four runs before being relieved by Rosol in the fourth inning. Rosol earned the win with five strikeouts.

In game two, Siena Heights started the scoring in the first inning as a couple errors llowed SHU on base. With the bases loaded, Nordstrom hit a home run to help SHU to a 5-0 lead at the end of the first inning. Siena Heights struck again in the second inning as Kris Forest sent one over the fence to score two, giving SHU a 7-0 lead. Aquinas scored three in the fifth inning to end the scoring for the game.

With four RBIs was Nordstrom as she went 1-for-3 on the day. Forest managed two hits, including the two-run homer. Seven different Aquinas Saints managed a hit while Senkbeil earned two RBIs.

Earning the win for SHU was Lauren Valdez, striking out three while allowing seven hits and three runs. Mia Loya started for AQ, allowing five hits and seven runs, two earned. In the second inning, Bowen relieved her and allowed only one hit with two strikeouts.

Next up, Siena Heights will travel to Cornerstone on Monday for a 3:30 p.m. WHAC double-header.
