Softball Splits with Indiana Tech in WHAC Action

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Siena Heights softball team went 1-1 against Indiana Tech in Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference action, on Thursday. SHU won the first game 9-1 before falling 6-3 in game two.

Siena Heights started the scoring in the third inning as a Kelsey Cherry single sent Kris Forest home. IN Tech answered with a run of their own in the fourth inning, which would be the sole run for the Warriors. The Saints plated five in the bottom in the fourth inning and another three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to end it in five.

Cherry led the Saints as she went 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Skylar Crenshaw went 2-for-3 with two triples and an RBI for SHU. Five different Warriors earned hits, including Ashley Alvey with the lone RBI.

Throwing a complete game for the Saints and earning the win was Racquel Ward, striking out two batters while allowing only five hits and a run. Ashley Alvey started in the circle for the Warriors, allowing seven hits and six runs, five earned, while striking out two for the loss. Marta Pasqualini relieved Alvey in the fourth, allowing three hits and three runs.

In game two, Indiana Tech started the scoring with five runs in the second inning and a lone run in the third before SHU responded. In the bottom of the fourth, Siena Heights got on the board with a string on singles as Ward and Crenshaw earned one and two RBIs, respectively.

Fris Forest went 2-for4 to lead SHU while Crenshaw managed two RBIs. Seven different Warriors earned hits while Caitlyn Walter managed three RBIs and Emily Martin and Carolyn Murrey each managed one.

Starting for the Saints was Lauren Best, pitching for 1.2 innings with six hits and five runs, only one earned, and taking the loss. She was relieved by Lauren Valdez who struck three batters in 3.1 innings, allowing only two hits and an unearned run. Closing out the pitching for the Saints was Ward, striking out one batter and allowing only one hit in two innings of action. Pitcher Amanda Shonka pitched the complete game for the Warriors, earning the win with four strikeouts and nine hits with three earned runs.

Next up, the Saints will travel to Madonna for a WHAC double-header, on Saturday, with a 1 p.m. start. Following the double-header, the Saints will travel to Concordia to conclude the suspended game from Wednesday, April 18, on Saturday.
