DETROIT, Mich.—The Siena Heights softball team split with Michigan-Dearborn, on Wednesday, in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action. The first game the Saints fell 3-8. They bounced back in the second game winning 12-8 before the game was called in the sixth due to darkness.
In game one, the Saints were able to push one across before giving up two in the first inning. They gave up another run in the second before a scoreless third and fourth innings. The Saints scored again in the top of the fifth on a Racquel Ward solo home run, before allowing four Wolverine runs in the bottom of the same inning. The Saints added two hits and one run in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as UM-Dearborn earned the 8-3 victory.
The Saints and Wolverines (11-9, 3-3 WHAC) each had 10 hits. Leading the way for the Saints was Ward, going 3-for-4 and adding a home run to her cause. Kelsey Cherry also went 3-for-4, while Helmink and Turk added two hits respectively. On the mound in the first game Ward took the loss going 6.1 innings, allowing 10 hits while striking out two.
In the second game, the bats were quiet for both teams in the first inning. Crenshaw woke them up in the second inning with a solo shot. It was answered by two Wolverine runs on three hits. The Saints responded in the third inning, plating seven runs on seven hits. UM-Dearborn then answered scoring five of their own. Two homers by Forest and Ward tacked on three more for the Saints. The Wolverines responded by pushing one more across before a zero hit, zero run fifth and sixth for both teams before the game was called due to darkness. This resulted in the Saints 12-8 victory.
Kris Forest and Skylar Crenshaw each had two hits and three RBIs, while Ashley Helmink added two hits and one RBI. Bearden and Ward each added two RBIs. Best started on the mound allowing eight hits while striking out two. Ward came in and gave up three hits while striking out two to earn the win.
The Saints move to 11-7, 3-1 on the season. They will take the field again at home, on Thursday, when they face Northwestern Ohio in a conference double-header starting at 3:30 p.m.
