Abbott Tosses Shutout in Softball's Split With Cornerstone

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights softball team split a pair of games with Cornerstone, winning 5-0 and losing 4-1, in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play at Christensen Memorial Field on Saturday.

Kelsie Abbott was the winning pitcher in game one, firing a seven-hit shutout. She recorded six strikeouts. At the plate, Abbott had a double.

Morgan Warfield batted 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI and two stolen bases. Taylor Hayes added a 2-for-3 game with an RBI while Mariah Boss scored three runs.

The Saints took the lead for good on a Warfield single in the first inning.

Hayes smacked an RBI double in the second while Megan Jones ripped an RBI single.

Abbott had an RBI double in the fourth and Skylar Crenshaw hit an RBI single in the fifth to finish SHU's scoring.

Jenna Weightman finished 2-for-4 for Cornerstone with two doubles. Ashley Niedermayer went 2-for-3.

In the circle, Whitney Denton was the losing pitcher. She gave up five runs (two earned) on seven hits. Reliever Whitney Heasley worked two innings of scoreless ball.

In game two, the Saints were unable to recover from a 4-0 deficit.

Hannah Bleikamp provided the hosts' only run with an RBI single in the fifth. Taylor Hayes doubled twice to finish 2-for-3.

The Golden Eagles (16-12, 4-8) scored once in the first, once in the third and twice in the fourth.

Hailey Castillo and Logan Myers had 2-for-4 games. Castillo scored two runs while Myers doubled and had two RBI. Niedermayer went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Brooke Leonard was the winning pitcher, giving up one run on five hits while compiling four strikeouts and one walk.

The Saints (17-15, 5-9) will return to action on Sunday with an 11 a.m. WHAC doubleheader against 18th-ranked Davenport.
