Men's Track and Field Open Season with Success at SVSU Invitational

SAGINAW, Mich. -- The Siena Heights men's indoor track and field team earing two first place performances while garnering four NAIA automatic bids to the National Championships and a provisional performance at the Saginaw Valley State Invitational, on Saturday.

Taking first place in the 800 meter run was Brent Rodden, crossing the finish line in 1:51.88 for the Saints. Coming in fourth place at 1:54.81 was Dominic Muessig. Both Rodden and Muessig earned automatic qualifying marks.

The Saints took first place in the 4x400m relay after the team consisting of Blaine Ellington, Rodden, Muessig and Joshua Miles. SHU crossed the finish line in 3:19.51, another automatic qualifying time.

Clearing a height of 4.71 meters (15-5.5) in the pole vault was Jared Kimmitt, earning third place and an automatic qualifying mark.

Earning the lone SHU provisional qualifying time was Samuel Parlette who finished third in the 3000 meter in 8:39.64 on the oversized track.

In the 400 meter run, Torin Anderson finished fourth in 49.79 seconds. Robert Milton took fifth in the 200 meter dash in 22.27.

Finishing fourth, fifth and sixth in the 5000 meter run for the Saints was Anthony Vermilye, Esrom Woldemicheal and Stephen Merchant, respectively. Vermilye finished in 15:23.54 followed closely by Woldemicheal at 15:29.63. Crossing the finish line at 15:32.35 was Merchant.

Ryan Dukes took second place in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:25.09.

In the long jump, Joshua Jenkins earned second place with a distance of 6.44 meters (21 feet, 1.5 inches).

The Saints will be back in action on Friday and Saturday at the Kent State Invitational.
