Barros' Goals Lift Saints Over Lawrence Tech in First Win

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights men's soccer team earned their first game of the season against (Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference) WHAC opponent Lawrence Tech on Saturday afternoon. Gustavo Barros (Sr. | Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul) had both goals and the game-winning goal for the Saints.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first half reminded a scoreless deadlock as both teams exchanged possessions and pressed offensively while the defense kept shots on goal to a minimum. The Blue Devils had three shots on goal from Juan Jaramillo (43:32), Alvaro Gurrea (42:44), and Jaden King (35:00) but Andrew Kozan (Sr. | Canton, Mich.) held down the net. The Saints has an opportunity to put themselves on the board at the 24:37 mark as Joel Koshko (So. | Warren, Mich.) had a shot on goal but was not able to put it past Marko Matovski.

The second half remained a nail-biter as both teams pressed but the defense proved to be the difference. Lawrence Tech had a foul in the box that resulted in a yellow card and allowed Barros to score the penalty shot giving Siena the 1-0 lead at the 2:45 mark. Eight minutes later, the Saints struck again as Uthman Babatunde (Sr. | Lagos, Nigeria) had a shot on goal, and Marko Matovski made the save off of a deflection that allowed Barros to net the ball from the rebound. SHU's defense held the Blue Devils offense allowing zero shots on goal in the second half for the 2-0 win.

TOP SAINTS

• Barros also tallied three shots, two of which were goals. 

• Babatunde recorded one shot on goal and had the assist off of Barros' goal. 

• Kozan made three saves in the 90 minutes between the pipes for the Saints.

THE OPPOSITION

• Juan Jaramillo, Jaden King, and Alvaro Gurrea each had one shot on goal. 

• Marko Matovski made four saves off of six shots on goal in net for the Blue Devils.

The Saints host Cleary in a WHAC (Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference) contest on Saturday, March 13th. Kick-off is set for 4:00 PM.
