GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Six fourth quarter goals sunk the #5 Siena Heights men's lacrosse team, 7-5, in the 2018 Men's Lacrosse National Invitational quarterfinal, against #4 Cumberlands (Ky.), on Thursday.
Strong defense from both teams kept the score low through halftime as Ryan Mamo finished a pass from Danny Orr to score the lone goal in the first quarter. The Patriots responded in the second quarter with a goal from Dalton Smith with 12:22 on the clock. Mamo netted a pass from Garnet Potter to give SHU a 2-1 lead, which would hold through halftime.
Orr added a quick goal with 14:04 on the clock, finishing a pass from Parker Richards. Off a quick transition, Potter sent a pass to Mamo who found the back of the net at the 7:41 mark to put SHU up 4-1 in the final goal of the quarter.
UC started quick in the final quarter, scoring only eight seconds in as Thomas Fogarty finished a pass from Kody Swann. Two quick goals from the Patriots tied the score at 4-4 with 9:49 remaining on the clock. With 6:12 on the clock, Shane Lewandowski finished a pass from Potter to have a goal advantage. At the 5:00 minute mark, Dylan Crouch tied it again as he finished a Fogarty pass. Another fast goal from Henry Quaye at the 3:14 mark put the Patriots up 6-5.With 2:55 on the clock, UC netted the final goal of the game as Jake Mitchell hit the back of the net after a Caleb Elerick pass.
With three goals and three groundballs, Mamo led the SHU offense. Scoring solo goals for the Saints was Lewandowski and Orr. Potter earned three assists while Orr and Richards each tallied one. Tanner Cowell and Partick Albrant each managed three caused turnovers.
For the Patriots, Quaye scored twice while five other Patriots scored once. Three Patriots earned two caused turnovers, including Bryan Morgan who had a team-high five groundballs.
The Saints end their season with an 11-5 record overall. Advancing to the final round of the national tournament is Madonna, Cumberlands (Ky.), Indiana Tech and Reinhardt in games at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday.
