Men's Basketball Opens 2017 with a Loss to Aquinas

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Siena Heights men's basketball team dropped a 77-70 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contest to Aquinas, on Wednesday.

Aquinas opened the scoring early in the first half, scoring seven unanswered points. SHU fought back to earn a 19-11 lead with 10:17 remaining in the first half. The tides changed again as AQ went up 28-35 with 2:54 remaining in the first, only for SHU to come within two after an Aquinas last-second lay up set the score 37-35 heading into halftime.

The AQ Saints (9-8, 5-4) took a quick lead over Siena Heights and never looked back. SHU was within five points, 60-55, with 7:51 remaining in the game, but couldn't capitalize.

Leading Siena Heights (9-7, 4-5) with 21 points was Nick Randle--shooting 4-for-5 behind the arc--adding five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Earning 14 points for SHU was Jerrell Martin and making ten points each was Tony Jackson II and Christopher Pearl.

Aquinas was led by Jake Bullock who managed 22 points, six boards, four assists and two steals. Rob Diez and Arsenio Arrington scored 18 and 16 points, respectively.

From the floor, SHU went 24-56 (42.9%) as Aquinas shot 28-63 (44.4%). While even at the free throw line, SHU going 14-19 (73.7%) and Aquinas going 17-23 (73.9%), Siena Heights outshot AQ 8-18 (44.4%) compared to 4-13 (30.8%) in three-point land.

SHU will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Marygrove. The Saints will host a WHAC double-header with the SHU women's team play Marygrove at 5:30 p.m. and the men playing at 7:30 p.m.
