Martin Posts 22 in Men's Basketball Loss to Madonna

LIVONIA, Mich. -- Jerrell Martin finished with 22 points in the 72-71 Siena Heights men's basketball loss to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference foe Madonna, on Saturday.

Siena Heights maintained control of the scoreboard throughout the first half, going on an 11-0 streak to extend their lead to a 12-point gap with nine minutes to go. Madonna inched back to a single-digit deficit, SHU leading 34-25 heading into halftime.

Only four minutes into the second half, the Crusaders claimed a three-point lead over the Saints with the help of an 18-6 run over SHU. The remainder of the game remained close, neither team going five points over the other.

With 2:25 on the clock, Austin Johnson made a three-pointer to go up 71-68 over the Saints. Jon Hovermale made an SHU three with 00:39 on the clock to tie it up 71-71. With 00:17 left in the game, MU's Chris Dierker converted a free throw to take the lead. The Saints had two chances to take the lead but were unable to.

Martin led the game with 22 points and nine rebounds. He also earned three blocks and a steal for the Saints. Christopher Pearl scored 15 points for SHU and added five rebounds.

Leading the Crusaders was Johnson with 19 points and three assists. Chris Dierker and Kahlil Malone added 16 and 10 points, respectively.

Overall, the Saints shot 23-56 for 41.1%, including 5-13 (38.5%) behind the arc. Madonna shot 26-57 (45.6%) overall and went 4-8 (50.0%) in three-point land. MU topped the Saints in free throw percentage, going 16-21 (76.2%) compared to SHU's 20-28 (71.4%).

Next up, Siena Heights will Fort Wayne to take on the Mastadons for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest, on Monday.
