Men's Hoops' Spirited Effort Falls Short Against #5 Davenport

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Christian Covile had 25 points and eight rebounds while George Goodman scored 11 points as the Siena Heights men's basketball team fell short in its upset bid against fifth-ranked Davenport, dropping a 69-61 decision in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action at the SHU Fieldhouse on Wednesday.

Goodman also had eight assists and five rebounds for the Saints (8-13, 4-9), who held a 38-30 halftime lead before failing to weather a Davenport storm in the second half.

During a first half which included eight lead changes, the Saints snapped a 30-all tie with eight consecutive points; credit Covile with six.

The visiting Panthers promptly responded in the second half, opening the period with a 9-0 run. That outburst was the beginning of a 20-3 stretch for DU in which it grabbed a 50-41 advantage. Davenport's leading scorer Dominez Burnett had 10 points during that stretch.

After that, the Saints closed its deficit to five, but that was as close as the hosts would get.

SHU went 14 of 30 from the field in the field half (46.7 percent) before slipping to 6 of 19 in the second (31.6). DU held a 39-30 rebounding advantage.

Burnett led the Panthers (16-3, 12-1) with 29 points and nine rebounds. Nick Gamble contributed 10 points, Dawid Czerniawski added eight rebounds, and Bishop Robinson dished five assists.

Siena Heights will return to action on Saturday with a 3 p.m. WHAC matchup at Concordia.
