Men's Basketball Unable to Pull Off Upset of #11 Cornerstone

ADRIAN, Mich. -- George Goodman was Siena Heights' leading scorer, finishing with 24 points and eight assists, during the Saints' men's basketball team's 93-79 loss to 11th-ranked Cornerstone at the SHU Fieldhouse on Tuesday.

Goodman went 8 of 14 from the field and 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Also for the Saints (5-4, 3-1), Christian Covile added 13 points, Tyler Leighton put in 10 points and Jerrell Martin made three blocks.

SHU and Cornerstone played to five ties in the first half before the Golden Eagles broke a 23-all knot with an 8-0 run. From there, the visitors led the rest of the way.

Siena Heights trailed by as many as 15 points before going on an eventual 11-2 stretch to close the gap to 69-64. During that run, Leighton had five points and Goodman contributed four.

Then, the Eagles outscored SHU, 24-15, to close the game, assuming their largest lead of 17 points with 20 seconds left in the contest.

Cory Cox was the leading scorer for Cornerstone, accumulating 27 points. Kyle Steigenga added a double-double worth 19 points and 13 rebounds while Michael McLaughlin contributed 14 points, five assists and three steals.

Also for the Golden Eagles (6-2, 3-1), Travis Wells had 10 points and seven rebounds. Justin Pepper had 10 points as well.

As a team, Cornerstone shot 33 of 58 from the field (56.9 percent), including 7 of 13 from three-point territory (53.8 percent). The Eagles also went 20 of 23 from the line (87.0 percent) and outrebounded the Saints, 37-20.

Siena Heights was 30 of 56 from the field (53.6 percent) and 8 of 20 from three-point land (40.0 percent).

The Saints will play their next contest on Tuesday, Dec. 2, when they host Indiana-South Bend for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
