Covile Buzzer-Beater Sends Men's Hoops Past Dearborn; Saints' Program Now at 799 Wins

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Christian Covile hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to lift the Siena Heights men's basketball team to a 56-53 victory over Michigan-Dearborn in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference competition on Saturday at the SHU Fieldhouse. The victory was the 799th win in SHU men's basketball history.

At 53-53, SHU's George Goodman came up with a steal and the Saints called a timeout just before the buzzer. With exactly one second on the clock, Goodman inbounded the ball to Covile, who turned and nailed a deep trey to lift Siena Heights to the win.

Covile finished with 12 points and seven rebounds while five of his teammates scored eight points each: Goodman, Stone Beckwith, Eric Cogan, Jerrell Martin and Lavario Smith.

The Saints (5-3, 3-0) trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half before a tenacious defensive effort allowed them back into the game.

SHU was behind, 53-42, with 10:06 remaining in the contest. From there, the Saints held UMD without a point while closing the game with 14 of their own. During that final stretch, the Wolverines (2-5, 1-2) went 0 of 7 from the field and committed nine turnovers.

Jamiel Strickland scored 14 points and Gage Throgmorton put in 12 for the Wolverines. Paul Standtke added 10 rebounds, Brandon Cole dished six assists, and Jason Penn made three blocks. As a team, UMD blocked 11 shots.

Siena Heights will return to action on Tuesday with an 8 p.m. WHAC matchup with Cornerstone.
