Matt Kohn is entering his seventh season as the Head Football Coach at Siena Heights University. In his previous six seasons serving as the leader of the program, Kohn has been able help produce several outstanding individual performances.

Kohn took over a program that had finished 4-6 in 2016. Since that time, the Saints have never had a losing record; set back to back school records for total wins in a season and saw the program finish two seasons ranked in the top 20 in the nation. 

In his sixth fall as the Head Coach at Siena Heights University the program was able to produce it’s 5th AFCA First-Team All-American in Linebacker Kole Murlin. In addition to this top national honor, Murlin was also selected the Mid-States defensive player of the year for an unprecedented 3rdstraight season. Murlin also became the 2ndSaint in the history of the program to receive the most NAIA votes for the Cliff Harris award. In addition to the individual success of Murlin, seven student-athletes received Mid-States all conference honors. The 2022 Saints were able to set a school record as 33 student athletes receiving Academic All-Conference honors. Much like the previous Fall, the 2022 Saints played in several close contests. The Saints started the season off going 3-3 in their first six games, losing those three contest by a combined 15 points. The Saints were able to finish off their season with some strong performances against top 10 nationally ranked opponents finishing the season with a 5-5 mark.  

The fall of 2021, the Saints played in several close contest finishing the season with a record of 6-4 Three of the four losses were by less than a touchdown with the pivotal scores happening in the final possession of the game. Kole Murlin was named the Mid-States Football defensive player of the year for the 2nd consecutive year, marking the 3rdtime Kohn has helped produce the conference player of the year. The Saints were also able to produce nine-student athletes with Mid-States all conference honors along with 24 student-athletes receiving Mid-States All-Academic recognition. 

The Saints were able to compete in only four football games In the Spring of 2021. The 2021 Saints showed remarkable improvement over the course of their very brief Spring season. In their final two games of this spring campaign, the Saints offense average 54.5 points per game while the defense only gave up an average of 3.5 points per game. Upon conclusion of the season, six student-athletes received all Mid-States Football honors as well as linebacker Kole Murlin being named the Mid-States Football defensive player of the year. This was the 2ndtime in his career Kohn had the opportunity to coach the defensive player of the year in the conference.    

In his 3rd season as the head coach, the Saints were able to achieve unprecedented success. The Saints tied their previous school record set in 2018 for wins in a season (7) and achieved the highest national ranking in the history of the program (14th). The 2019 season was also the first time in the program's history that the Saints were featured in the “National NAIA Game of the Week.” On October 26th the #18 Saints traveled to Fort Wayne, Ind., and beat the 6th ranked St. Francis (Ind.) 24-14. The Saints finished the season ranked 20th in the country, making it the best finish in program history. The Saints' success as a team brought several individual honors to many of its players. A school-record 12 players earned all Mid-States Football honors and defensive back Trevon Claybourne was named a 1st Team All American. Trevon is the 6th All-American Kohn has had an opportunity to coach while serving at Siena Heights. In his third season as the Head Football Coach, the Saints were able to set several records as a team. The Saints set school records for wins in a season (7), highest national ranking (20th), and overall cumulative team GPA (3.02).  

 

The 2018 season was the first time the Saints finished the regular season being a nationally ranked football team as the Saints received the final ranking of 25th in the nation. Kohn was extremely proud to have mentored Siena Heights First Team Academic All-American in defensive tackle Izayah Newsom. The 2018 Saints also produced 10 All-Mid-States Football players. 

 

In the Fall of 2017, the Saints were proud to have produced the best NAIA defensive football player in the country. The Cliff Harris award was given to Siena Heights defensive back Darius Price. In addition to this esteemed award, the Saints also included 8 All-Mid-States Football players. 

Kohn spent the fall of 2016 serving as the interim Head Coach for his debut season in the top coaching spot. The Saints finished a respectful 5-5 despite Kohn transitioning to the interim head coach role a few months before the start of the season.   

Kohn has had the opportunity to serve the Siena Heights Football program since its inception. Kohn started recruiting student-athletes to the football program in 2011 and spent five seasons serving as the program's defensive coordinator and linebacker coach. During those five seasons, the Siena Heights defense developed a national reputation as being one of the best in the country. 

In the fall of 2013, the Siena Heights defense was ranked fifth in the country in scoring defense only allowing 17.2 points per game and eighth in the country in total defense (299.5 ypg). Kohn helped mentor inside linebacker Tyler Karcher to All-Mid-States Association First Team. Kohn’s defense also produced the Mid States Association Defensive Player of the Year and Second Team AFCA All-American, cornerback Deshawn Gilbert. Gilbert helped anchor a stingy passing defense which ranked 11th in the country (167.2 ypg). 

In the fall of 2014, after only playing varsity football for three short years the Siena Heights defense was instrumental in bringing a Mid States East conference championship to Adrian, Mich. The Siena Heights defense finished ranked 11th in the country in scoring defense (18 ppg.), and second in the country in total defense (252.1 ypg.). The Siena Heights defense earned the No. 1 rank in the country, allowing only 133 first downs all season. Kohn coached both inside linebackers, Trent Bragg and Tyler Karcher to First and Second Team All-League selections, respectively. Kohn's defensive unit finished ranked third in the country defending the run (87.1 ypg) and 14th in the country defending the pass (165 ypg). For the second consecutive year, Kohn's defense produced an All-American, this time however it was a First Team All AFCA selection in defensive tackle Kyle Connors. Connors led a defensive line that finished 10th in the country in sacks (32). As a result of these team accomplishments, Kohn has been voted the Mid-States Football Association Mideast Assistant Coach of the Year. 

Kohn previously coached on the offensive side of the ball at his alma mater, the University of Indianapolis, where he coached the quarterbacks from 2005-08. 

As a player, Kohn still holds the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game record for most passing yards in a game (645), and total offense in a single game (652). In 2003, he was a Harlan Hill nominee, a national award given to the most valuable athlete in Division II football. 

Kohn received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Indianapolis in 2005, where he majored in both business management and marketing. He completed his Master’s degree in 2015 from Siena Heights University in Organizational Leadership. 

Kohn and his wife Alexis live in Adrian and are parents to two daughters, Sophia (4) and Olivia (6 months).
