Football Stumbles at #22 Marian

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Quarterback Travis Zajkowski threw for a school-record 377 yards, but the Siena Heights football team struggled to turn yards into points as it suffered a 26-7 setback to 22nd-ranked Marian (Ind.) in Mid-States Football Association Mideast League play on Saturday.

Zajkowski broke his previous SHU single-game records for pass completions, attempts and yards. He finished 29 of 57 while finishing with one touchdown and one interception.

Siena Heights' lone TD occurred on an 8-yard hookup from Zajkowski to wide receiver Raphael Dunson. The play gave the visiting Saints their only lead of the day as SHU went up 7-3, but then allowed 23 unanswered points.

Four different Saint receivers had over 80 yards through the air. Wide receiver Reggie Blackmon had seven catches for 83 yards, Dunson finished with six grabs for 113 yards, tight end Donovan Campbell compiled six receptions for 81 yards, and wide receiver Damola Adebiyi finished with five hookups for 88 yards.

While SHU found ways to move the ball in the passing game, it struggled immensely on the ground. Including Marian's seven sacks, which figure into the rushing totals, the Saints finished with 24 carries for negative-15 yards. Despite that, SHU outgained its hosts, 362-280.

On defense, defensive back Da'vonte Price accumulated eight total tackles and one interception. Linebackers Trent Bragg and Tyler Karcher added seven tackles apiece; both had sacks while Bragg finished with 2 1/2 tackles-for-loss and Karcher contributed two TFLs.

Linebacker Nic Acton added 2 1/2 TFLs for the Saints.

Marian took the game's first lead on a 28-yard field goal by kicker Martin Waddick, but SHU responded later with the Zajkowski-to-Dunson score.

The Saints' 7-3 advantage held until the Knights (3-2, 1-1) took the lead on running back Robert Gibson's 38-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Brandon Beitzel, helping Marian to a 10-7 lead late in the third quarter.

MU then rattled off 16 more points in the fourth, getting a 1-yard TD run from Beitzel and, later, a 12-yard TD pass from Beitzel to Krishawn Hogan.

A safety wrapped up the scoring for the host Knights.

Beitzel finished 10 of 25 for 120 yards through the air and eight carries for 37 yards on the ground. Running back Tevin Lake added 24 runs for 75 yards.

For the Knight defense, defensive backs Eric Price and Daniel Rojas made nine tackles each. Linebacker Beau Shields added eight tackles (3 1/2 TFLs), including two sacks and a forced fumble.

Also, linebacker Bryan Goodin had 2 1/2 TLFs (1 1/2 sacks) and a forced fumble. Fellow linebacker Alexander Wetmore made two sacks while defensive back Jeremy Shupperd had an interception.

The Saints (2-3, 1-1) will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, with a 1 p.m. MSFA Mideast home contest against Concordia.
